The short answer
If your headlights are yellow or cloudy on the outside and the housings aren’t cracked or full of moisture, restoration is almost always the better choice. It costs a fraction of replacement (Beacon starts at $99.99), takes about an hour and restores most of the light output. Replace the headlight only when the housing is broken, moisture is trapped inside, or the internal reflector is damaged.
Side-by-side comparison
| Restoration | Replacement | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cost | From $99.99 with Beacon | Often hundreds of dollars per side, plus labor; far more for LED or adaptive lights |
| Time | About an hour, at your location | Order parts, then a shop visit |
| Fixes yellowing & haze | Yes | Yes |
| Fixes cracks or internal moisture | No | Yes |
| Keeps original factory parts | Yes | Only with costly OEM parts |
When restoration is the right call
- The lens is yellow, foggy or milky on the outside.
- The surface feels rough or the clear coat is flaking.
- The inside of the headlight is dry and the reflector looks shiny.
- The housing and mounting tabs are intact.
This describes the vast majority of cloudy headlights we see in Knoxville. The bulb and housing are fine; only the outer surface has broken down.
When you really need a new headlight
- Moisture or fog inside the lens that doesn’t clear up, usually from a failed seal or a crack.
- A cracked or broken housing from an accident or a rock strike.
- A burned or peeling reflector inside the headlight, which shows up as dark or flaking chrome.
- Broken mounting tabs that keep the headlight from staying aimed correctly.
Watch out for cheap aftermarket headlights
Bargain replacement headlights can look great out of the box, but quality varies widely. Some have poorer beam patterns or thinner UV coatings that yellow quickly. Restoring your original factory headlights keeps the light pattern your car was engineered for.
What about selling or trading in?
Clear headlights are one of the cheapest ways to make a used car look years newer in listing photos and on the lot. One of our Mustang customers had offers within days of listing after a restoration. If you’re getting a car ready to sell, restoration is usually the best return for the money.
